Want your new hair color to look as fabulous a few weeks down the road as it does stepping out of the salon? Use these 5 easy tips from Rivendell Hair - A Paul Mitchell Focus Salon, to keep your hair healthy, color vibrant, and save money by scheduling retouches less often!
1. Quality Shampoo and Conditioner
Make a smart investment in professional quality shampoo and conditioner. Despite what they claim, over-the-counter products sold at grocery stores just can't give your hair color the protection that it needs. For many hair types, Paul Mitchell Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner does wonders, but be sure to ask your hairstylist for a personalized recommendation. Professional products should be purchased only from a salon or salon professional.
2. Water Temperature
Use only cool water to wash your hair. Hot water opens up the cuticle, allowing color molecules to come out. Cold water keeps the cuticle packed tightly, keeping color in, and it gets your hair just as clean as hot water will. It is also better for the environment, and will save you money on energy bills!
3. Heat Protection
Air drying is the best for your hair, but it's not an option for everyone. If you plan to blow dry, you need to use a product that will protect your hair from the heat. A couple that I use on almost everyone are Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam and Paul Mitchell Seal & Shine. These should be thoroughly applied prior to blow drying, and again before flat ironing or curling. Hair should always be completely dry before using a flat iron or curling iron.
4. UV Protection
Most people use sunscreen on their skin to protect it from the sun's harmful UV rays. But what about your hair? Hair needs protection too. Sunlight is a leading cause of fading and the number one cause for yellowing blonde hair (smoking is the number two cause!). Before you leave your house, even in the winter and on cloudy days, you should spray on a color protecting spray, such as Paul Mitchell Color Care Locking Spray.
5. Reconstruction
Overly processed hair is too porous to hold on to color and needs a deep treatment, such as Paul Mitchell Color Protect Reconstructive Treatment. This should be used once a week to keep hair healthy. Just apply to shampooed, towel dried hair, and allow to work for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
Follow these simple tips and your hair color will stay looking its absolute best between visits to the salon! Ask your stylist how often you should rebook to keep your color fresh and take care of pesky roots! Every 6 weeks is the average.
