5 Tips for Colored Hair

Want your new hair color to look as fabulous a few weeks down the road as it does stepping out of the salon? Use these 5 easy tips from Rivendell Hair - A Paul Mitchell Focus Salon, to keep your hair healthy, color vibrant, and save money by scheduling retouches less often!

1. Quality Shampoo and Conditioner
Make a smart investment in professional quality shampoo and conditioner. Despite what they claim, over-the-counter products sold at grocery stores just can't give your hair color the protection that it needs. For many hair types, Paul Mitchell Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner does wonders, but be sure to ask your hairstylist for a personalized recommendation. Professional products should be purchased only from a salon or salon professional.

2. Water Temperature
Use only cool water to wash your hair. Hot water opens up the cuticle, allowing color molecules to come out. Cold water keeps the cuticle packed tightly, keeping color in, and it gets your hair just as clean as hot water will. It is also better for the environment, and will save you money on energy bills!

3. Heat Protection
Air drying is the best for your hair, but it's not an option for everyone. If you plan to blow dry, you need to use a product that will protect your hair from the heat. A couple that I use on almost everyone are Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam and Paul Mitchell Seal & Shine. These should be thoroughly applied prior to blow drying, and again before flat ironing or curling. Hair should always be completely dry before using a flat iron or curling iron.

4. UV Protection
Most people use sunscreen on their skin to protect it from the sun's harmful UV rays. But what about your hair? Hair needs protection too. Sunlight is a leading cause of fading and the number one cause for yellowing blonde hair (smoking is the number two cause!). Before you leave your house, even in the winter and on cloudy days, you should spray on a color protecting spray, such as Paul Mitchell Color Care Locking Spray.

5. Reconstruction
Overly processed hair is too porous to hold on to color and needs a deep treatment, such as Paul Mitchell Color Protect Reconstructive Treatment. This should be used once a week to keep hair healthy. Just apply to shampooed, towel dried hair, and allow to work for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

Follow these simple tips and your hair color will stay looking its absolute best between visits to the salon! Ask your stylist how often you should rebook to keep your color fresh and take care of pesky roots! Every 6 weeks is the average.

my extensions

so i got the shapeshifter hair in the mail (from doctored locks, they are awesome)
i am not sure how well it will turn out because it is SOOO much finer than my hair. my hair is pretty coarse. but maybe it will blend in enough. we'll see. it's like baby fine though. i got 3 different shades of pink, none of which exactly match the pink that is on my real hair, so it will have to be multidimensional. i also got white for underneath. probably if i were to order it again, i would get the ivory platinum or whatever, like off-white. but i didn't have a proper color swatch chart to order from at the time. they sent one with the order, so if i re-order, it will be easier. can't order coarser hair though.

so anyway, erin will be installing it on monday, and i will let you know how it turns out!
we have an advanced cutting class on tuesday. so prettymuch i am going to have to drive up here every single day this week, haha. oh well.

trying to work on making the salon look nicer. had to deal with a broken chair today.

erin and i are thinking about making some uberly awesome hair accessories to sell at the salon, what do you think? i'm pretty excited, i haven't had time or an excuse to get my craft on in a while...

anyone seen the show "tabatha's salon takeover" on bravo? it's one of my new favorites. the season of shear genius is over now. haven't seen split ends on in a while, or peter perfect. style channel, why have you forsaken me?

p.s. IT'S COLD TODAY!!!!

the next big thing???

Ms. Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham stole all of the attention at the Marc Jacobs show during New York Fashion Week on September 8th when she showed up with a pixie instead of the "pob"! More tousled than Mia Farrow's but with all of the glam. So many women around the world followed suit when Victoria sported her layered, inverted bob that I think if I were to consult my crystal ball it would show me trillions of textured, short-cropped cuts in our future.

HEAD FOR CHANGE

You will notice Rivendell Hair getting a little face lift over the coming months. We are always striving to improve ourselves and our space, and we are doing our best with our limited funds to make our salon more comfortable and functional. You can help support us in our mission by making your hair care purchases here. We believe that you deserve the best products on the market in order to keep your fabulous cuts and color looking their best. That is why we carry only Paul Mitchell professional products and make everything that you need available to you, including hot tools and brushes! Our prices on Paul Mitchell products are much lower than the grocery store because we buy directly from the distibuter. Only salons and industry professionals are allowed to buy Paul Mitchell products. That means that 100% of the “professional” products that you see in the drug store are black market! They may be tampered with, counterfeit, or contain dangerous levels of bacteria, and their price is marked up so that all of the “middle-men” can get their cut. We use the small percentage of profits that we make off of the sale of take-home products for only two things: to buy more product, and to fund salon improvements and expenses. That is how your purchase here can directly support us!

We hope that you will also be happy to know that along with John Paul Mitchell Systems, we are getting greener all the time, and we encourage you to do the same! For more information about a few of Paul Mitchell’s green campaigns, please visit http://www.paulmitchell.com/headforchange

new hairs!

erin, switch and i all got our hair done on monday!

i will take pictures of switch and myself when we have makeup on (or me, at least), but here are a couple pictures of erin's cut and color that i did, which i stole from her myspace:

http://a998.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/109/l_00b7e9ee28b68815faccf8570a20d59d.jpg
http://a756.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/36/l_424c6e406e0df89fb619a5d09403acfb.jpg

we did her platinum retouch, and added lavender instead of her usual light warm brown in the bangs. the cut is very layered and choppy and assymmetrical, with her heavy side being longer in the front. she also got shorter baby bangs and more layered side bangs. the baby bangs aren't very visable in the picture (you can kind of see them in the black and white photo, which was taken before we did her color retouch). loves it!

erin did my hair, prettymuch the same as i have been doing it for the past few months, just retouched my pink, and i got new, rounded bangs.photos later.

switch got his hair cut at jennifer's dog grooming here in town. i think we are going to do a pink heart on his back, using the "graffiti" technique and a stencil. he's so cute! i'll definitely take pics when we do that!

this week has been crazy busy, with back to school and all! it's awesome! we seem to be getting busier and busier, so if you want to make an appointment, try to make it at least a week in advance, if possible!

we got our new paul mitchell focus kit at rivendell hair, which i am very excited about! it included some of the new tea tree firm hold gel, the new paul mitchell smoothing iron 1.25, some "head for change" posters (www.paulmitchell.com/headforchange), and a bunch of advanced color theory and advanced education type stuff, dvds, cds, literature, etc. we've also got a new class coming up next monday. woo!

i guess that is about it. the website is almost done. i just need to find some blogging application that i want to use for it. expect it to be up and running by next week!
